Hi,

I have Sharepoint Foundation 2010 installed in our Staging environment. But now I would like to install Microsoft Search Server Express 2010 (SSE) also on Staging due to its advanced search features. I have the following questions

1.) Is it possible/advisable to install SSE 2010 on the server even though Sharepoint          Foundation 2010 already exists on the same server?

2.) Will the installation of SSE 2010 automatically lead to the upgrade of Sharepoint 2010 Foundation to SSE 2010 express?

3.) http://sharepointcommunity.de/forums/t/8126.aspx , I came across this post in the forum where Olaf Didszun mentions that it does not cause any harm to install SSE 2010 even when SPF 2010 is already installed. Can you kindly verify the same.

Thanks in advance for your support on this.

P.S: My German is not so good , though I can understand the same, kindly execuse me for writing in english.

Regards

Shruti

You should better post your questions to an english speaking forum, e.g. here: http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/home

We I don't like writing in english very much...

To answer your question: installing SSE after SPF works very well. It "only" provisions a new service application to handle the search functionality. Keep in mind that SSE doesn't scale. That means that it can only run on one server.

I remember having problems on a Foundation server were the Office web Apps were installed. In this case the installation of SSE failed and I couldn't get it to work.

Hi Andi,

Thnx for your answer!!! You are most welcome to answer in German, whatever you are comfortable with. I find this forum more informative than others so thought of asking question here. Lets get over the language barrier and try to solve issues.

One more question: SSE doesnt scale , does this mean that it will not support multiple farms?

Thnx for your help

Shruti

I must admit, that I really don't know. It can only run on one server (but also in a farm consisting of multiple servers. Search uses only one in this case), but I don't know, if you can publish it to another farm.

why dont you backup ure existing DBS and install a clean search server?

If you will run into other issues, you never will exactly know is it because of my deployment, will MS give you than support?

Plan before you do unsupported things for future!

Installing SSE over an existing SharePoint Foundation is not unsupported. The only issue is (as already mentioned) if you have Office Web Apps.

To have a backup before trying such things is of course mandatory...
